CPRMC Earns Seventh ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from Leapfrog Group
June 13, 2025

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center (CPRMC) received its seventh consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit group that sets standards for excellence in patient safety and care. Carolina Pines is one of only 24 hospitals in South Carolina to earn an “A” grade during Leapfrog’s Spring 2025 assessments, which were announced on May 1.
Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. Fewer than one-third of the approximately 3,000 hospitals reviewed nationwide earn Leapfrog’s “A” grade. The Spring 2025 A grade marks Carolina Pines’ seventh consecutive A grade from The Leapfrog Group, earning the hospital Leapfrog’s elite “Straight A” designation.
“Earning the prestigious Leapfrog ‘A’ grade for safety is a strong validation of our team’s efforts, and earning seven straight ‘A’s’ puts Carolina Pines in some pretty unique company, nationwide,” said Dr. Brian Sponseller, Chief Medical Officer of Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. “Our goal is to provide essential healthcare services to this community and exceptional patient outcomes and experiences, all in as safe an environment as possible. These awards from Leapfrog, one of the nation’s premier healthcare consumer advocates, should continue to give patients great confidence in the care they will receive when they come to Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”
The latest Leapfrog Group recognition follows several recent accolades received by Carolina Pines over the past year. In December, the hospital was again named a Top General Hospital by Leapfrog, one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. In November, Carolina Pines earned its sixth consecutive A grade during Leapfrog’s Fall 2024 ratings. In August, Carolina Pines earned ScionHealth’s “Platinum Award,” the highest honor presented as part of the 92-hospital company’s National Quality Strategy. In May, the hospital earned the A grade in Leapfrog’s Spring 2024 ratings. In April, Carolina Pines’ employed Medical Practice again attained recognition as a Patient-Centered Medical Home from the National Center for Quality Assurance.
