Training Sites
Residents at Carolina Pines train in a variety of clinical settings that provide broad, hands-on exposure to the full scope of family medicine. Through experiences in our family medicine clinic, inpatient units, open ICU, emergency department, obstetric services, and specialty care settings, residents develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to deliver exceptional care across all stages of life. Each training site is supported by dedicated faculty who are committed to mentorship, progressive autonomy, and preparing the next generation of family physicians to serve their communities with excellence.
Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center
Hartsville, SC | Primary Site | All Three Years
Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center (CPRMC) serves as the program's primary clinical site and the central inpatient training location for the Family Medicine Residency Program. All residents rotate through this site in each year of training. CPRMC provides the majority of required inpatient and acute care experiences, including Family Medicine Teaching Service (adult inpatient medicine), intensive care, emergency medicine, obstetrics and labor and delivery, newborn care, surgery, and required subspecialty exposures.
Residents participate in progressive, supervised clinical responsibilities appropriate to their level of training, with direct supervision by appropriately credentialed, board-certified attending physicians within each clinical service. Each required rotation at CPRMC has a designated service or rotation lead responsible for educational oversight, supervision standards, and resident evaluation, with overall program oversight by the Program Director.
CPRMC also serves as the primary site for interprofessional education, patient safety and quality improvement activities, simulation, and systems-based practice experiences. The site's proximity to the Family Medicine Practice allows for integration of inpatient and outpatient training while supporting continuity of care across settings.
MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital
Charleston, SC | One Month | PGY-2
MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital serves as the primary inpatient pediatrics training site for Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Family Medicine residents. During this required PGY-1 rotation, residents gain comprehensive experience in the care of acutely ill infants, children, and adolescents within a tertiary care academic children's hospital. The rotation provides exposure to a breadth of pediatric pathology and levels of acuity that are not available at the primary rural training site.
Residents function as active members of the inpatient pediatric care team under the supervision of MUSC pediatric hospitalists and subspecialists. They perform admission histories and physical examinations, participate in daily management of hospitalized pediatric patients with common conditions such as bronchiolitis, asthma exacerbations, pneumonia, dehydration, and febrile illnesses, and engage in interdisciplinary rounds that emphasize family-centered care.
Residents develop clinical reasoning skills through case-based discussions and apply evidence-based management while learning appropriate monitoring, escalation of care, and discharge planning to ensure safe transitions. This experience provides structured exposure to pediatric inpatient workflows, interprofessional team communication, and care coordination within a large academic health system.
MUSC Health Jean and Hugh K. Leatherman Behavioral Care Pavilion
Florence, SC | One Month | PGY-2
The MUSC Health Jean and Hugh K. Leatherman Behavioral Care Pavilion serves as a participating site for the program's required psychiatry rotation, which occurs during PGY-2 and provides concentrated exposure to inpatient and acute behavioral health care. Residents rotate through this site to develop competence in the evaluation and management of common psychiatric conditions across the lifespan, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders, as well as crisis assessment and stabilization.
Training emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, safe transitions of care, and integration of behavioral health principles into family medicine practice. Residents are supervised by appropriately credentialed, board-certified psychiatry attending physicians within the Behavioral Care Pavilion. Each rotation has designated service leadership responsible for supervision, educational oversight, and resident evaluation, with overall oversight by the Program Director.
The limited duration of this off-site rotation minimizes disruption to longitudinal continuity clinic. Scheduling adjustments are made before and after the rotation to support continuity of care in the Family Medicine Practice while ensuring residents receive comprehensive behavioral health training.
The Children's Group
Hartsville, SC | One Month | PGY-1
The Children's Group serves as a primary ambulatory pediatrics site for Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Family Medicine residents, providing supervised experience in the outpatient care of infants, children, and adolescents. During this rotation, residents participate in the evaluation and management of common pediatric conditions across the spectrum of well-child care and acute visits, including upper respiratory infections, otitis media, asthma, dermatologic conditions, gastrointestinal complaints, and developmental and behavioral concerns.
Residents perform age-appropriate histories and physical examinations, conduct health maintenance visits, and develop competency in immunization delivery, growth and developmental surveillance, anticipatory guidance, and screening for social determinants of health. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based preventive care, appropriate use of diagnostic testing, and family-centered communication.
Residents also gain experience in recognizing conditions that require escalation of care or referral to pediatric subspecialists. The clinical setting allows residents to work closely with pediatric faculty and office staff to understand outpatient workflow, care coordination, and documentation requirements specific to pediatric populations. This experience supports development of efficiency, preventive care planning, and continuity principles that are reinforced in the Family Medicine Practice.
Morphis Pediatrics
Hartsville, SC | Six Weeks | PGY-1
Dr. Elizabeth Morphis's clinic serves as a primary ambulatory pediatrics site for Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Family Medicine residents, providing supervised outpatient experience in the care of infants, children, and adolescents. During this rotation, residents participate in well-child examinations, immunizations, growth and developmental surveillance, anticipatory guidance, and the evaluation and management of common acute pediatric conditions such as upper respiratory infections, otitis media, asthma, dermatologic conditions, and gastrointestinal complaints.
Residents perform age-appropriate histories and physical examinations, develop pediatric clinical reasoning, and apply evidence-based preventive care and treatment plans within a family-centered care model. The experience emphasizes appropriate use of diagnostic testing, recognition of conditions requiring escalation of care or referral, and effective communication with patients and caregivers. Residents also gain familiarity with outpatient pediatric workflow, documentation standards, and coordination of care within a community-based practice.
Residents are assigned to a single ambulatory pediatrics site for the full duration of the rotation and will be scheduled at either the Children's Group or Dr. Morphis's clinic, but do not divide the rotation between the two sites. This structure ensures continuity of supervision, consistent evaluation, and immersion in a single practice environment.
Mercy Medical Free Clinic
Hartsville, SC | Across PGY-2 and PGY-3
Mercy Medical Free Clinic serves as a longitudinal community medicine site for Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Family Medicine residents beginning in the PGY-2 year and continuing through PGY-3 in conjunction with their Family Medicine Practice rotation. At this site, residents provide supervised primary care to underserved and uninsured adult patients, many of whom have limited access to the health care system and present with advanced chronic disease and unmet preventive care needs.
Residents participate in comprehensive outpatient care including chronic disease management (such as diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia), acute visits, preventive screening, medication management using low-cost formularies, and coordination of care with community resources. The rotation emphasizes cost-conscious, high-value care, population health principles, and the impact of social determinants of health on clinical decision- making. Residents develop skills in resource stewardship, care prioritization, and adapting evidence-based guidelines to settings with limited diagnostic and therapeutic options.
The clinical experience is interprofessional and team-based, involving collaboration with volunteer nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and community support services. Residents also gain experience in care transitions, referral coordination for specialty services, and patient education tailored to varying levels of health literacy. This longitudinal experience reinforces continuity, access, and community engagement while preparing residents to care for vulnerable populations in resource-limited environments.
Wilson Senior Care
Hartsville, SC | Eighteen months across PGY-2 and PGY-3
Wilson Senior Care, Morell serves as the primary geriatrics clinical site for Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Family Medicine residents. This required rotation provides residents with structured, supervised experience in the longitudinal and comprehensive care of older adults across the spectrum of aging, including patients with multimorbidity, functional decline, cognitive impairment, and polypharmacy. Residents work under the supervision of geriatrics-focused physicians and interdisciplinary team members, participating in the evaluation and management of common geriatric conditions such as dementia, delirium, falls, frailty, medication-related complications, osteoporosis, urinary incontinence, and goals-of-care planning.
The rotation emphasizes functional assessment, medication reconciliation and deprescribing, capacity evaluation, and incorporation of social determinants of health into care planning. Residents also gain experience with advance care planning, including discussions of code status, health care proxies, and alignment of medical treatment with patient goals and values. The clinical environment provides exposure to team-based care involving nursing, social work, rehabilitation services, and care coordination, allowing residents to develop skills in transitions of care, post-acute management, and prevention of hospital readmissions. Residents learn to apply evidence-based geriatric principles, balance risk and benefit in complex decision-making, and tailor care plans to patient function and quality of life.
