Family Medicine Across the Hospital
At Carolina Pines, family medicine extends well beyond the outpatient clinic. Family physicians practice in the emergency department, inpatient setting, ICU, maternity care, and community practice while working alongside specialist colleagues and multidisciplinary teams.
Family medicine is also represented in hospital leadership. Carolina Pines CEO Brian Sponseller, MD, is a family physician, and multiple board-certified family physicians practice in the Emergency Department.
This creates an environment that supports family physicians in practicing to the full breadth of their training. Residents see broad-scope family medicine modeled every day by physicians caring for patients across multiple settings and stages of life.
For residents, that means learning from physicians who practice the same broad-scope medicine they teach. Family medicine is visible throughout the hospital, faculty are accessible, and increasing responsibility is paired with direct supervision and mentorship.
