Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Expands Local Access to Advanced Prostate Care with New HoLEP Procedure

Carolina Pines Dr. Fukuda explains new HoLEP procedure to advance prostate care

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center is expanding access to advanced urologic care with the introduction of Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), a highly effective, minimally invasive treatment for men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate. The procedure is performed by urologist Dr. Christopher Fukuda of Carolina Pines Medical Group Urology, bringing a leading-edge treatment option to patients in the region.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common condition affecting aging men and can lead to bothersome urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting or maintaining urine flow, nighttime urination, and incomplete bladder emptying. Left untreated, BPH can significantly affect quality of life and may lead to additional complications.

HoLEP is considered one of the most effective surgical treatments for BPH. Using a specialized holmium laser, the surgeon precisely removes the obstructive prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow. The procedure allows for complete removal of the enlarged tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding structures.

“HoLEP is a gamechanger for men dealing with significant prostate enlargement,” said Dr. Fukuda. “The laser allows us to safely and precisely remove the obstructing prostate tissue, which can dramatically improve urinary symptoms and quality of life for our patients.”

Compared to traditional prostate surgeries, HoLEP offers several important benefits, including:

  • Minimally invasive approach
  • Reduced bleeding risk
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Faster recovery time
  • Long-lasting symptom relief
  • Effective treatment for even very large prostates

Because the procedure is performed endoscopically through the natural urinary passage, patients typically experience less discomfort and a quicker return to normal activities than with older surgical techniques.

“Bringing advanced procedures like HoLEP to Carolina Pines reflects our commitment to offering innovative treatments close to home,” said Dr. Brian Sponseller, CEO of Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. “Patients in our community deserve access to the latest technology and highly skilled specialists without having to travel far for care.”

Dr. Fukuda specializes in diagnosing and treating a wide range of urologic conditions affecting the urinary tract and male reproductive system. The addition of HoLEP further enhances the comprehensive urology services available at Carolina Pines.

Men experiencing symptoms of an enlarged prostate are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider about evaluation and treatment options.
