Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Appoints Dr. Brian Sponseller as its New CEO
HARTSVILLE, South Carolina (August 1, 2025) – Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center (CPRMC or Carolina Pines) today announced that Dr. Brian Sponseller, Interim CEO since April, has accepted the role of CEO, effective August 1. Dr. Sponseller has operated a primary care practice at Carolina Pines Medical Group for eight years and also served as the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer since 2018.
“Brian knows Carolina Pines as a practitioner and as a leader, and we are thrilled that he is ready to take the next step in his career and help write the next chapter in the hospital’s ongoing success story,” said Russell Pigg, President, Community Hospitals Division at ScionHealth, CPRMC’s parent company. “He’s demonstrated throughout his tenure at Carolina Pines, including several weeks as Interim CEO, that he can effectively drive high-quality care and services tailored to the community, outcomes essential to the success of our hospitals.”
As part of the transition to full-time CEO, Dr. Sponseller will discontinue his practice at Carolina Pines Medical Group but will continue to don his white coat and stethoscope on occasion while doing rounds as a hospitalist at the medical center. He said the opportunity to make an even greater impact on the hospital and its patients as CEO was too good to pass up.
“I’m really excited to try to grow the hospital and continue to give the community the facility it deserves,” he said. “I believe we can continue to deliver the high standard of care that’s become synonymous with Carolina Pines over the past five to six years, and continue to develop service lines that bring essential care closer to our patients.”
He noted that his brief tenure as Interim CEO gave him valuable experience and the confidence to take the position full-time.
“It was a good dry run for me,” said Dr. Sponseller. “There is always a bit of a leap when moving from the clinical side of medicine to the business side, but these two months gave me the opportunity to see that I can blend the two and that I bring a unique perspective to the position.”
Dr. Sponseller’s official start date in early August coincides with the culmination of the 30-day notice he is required to give his patients upon discontinuing his practice.
