Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Becomes a Foundational Supporter of The Center Theater’s 36–26 COMEBACK Campaign

Hartsville, SC (December 22, 2025) - Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center (CPRMC) is honored to support one of Hartsville’s most beloved institutions – the historic Center Theater – as a Foundational Supporter of its 36-26 COMEBACK Campaign. This contribution marks the first gift of the campaign and reflects CPRMC’s deep appreciation for the community members and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to bring new life to a building that has shaped the cultural heartbeat of the Pee Dee for nearly a century.

“This campaign has moved forward because of people and organizations who care deeply about Hartsville,” said Ben Gore, Chair of the Hartsville Community Center Building Commission. “Having Carolina Pines step in as our first major supporter adds meaningful momentum, and we’re thankful for their commitment to helping bring this historic space back to life.”

Originally opened in 1936 as a grand movie theater showcasing Hollywood’s biggest hits, The Center Theater has a rich and remarkable history. Over the decades, it evolved into a premier live performance venue, hosting legendary acts such as Johnny Cash, The Three Stooges, The Von Trapp Family, Conway Twitty, and productions like Columbia City Ballet’s The Nutcracker. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, the theater remains one of Hartsville’s most distinguished landmarks.

The vision to restore and revitalize The Center Theater officially launched in 2022, after years of wear and tear resulted in significant structural challenges – including an impaired roof, leaking limestone walls, and extensive interior water damage. Thanks to the unwavering belief and dedication of the 36-26 COMEBACK Committee and community partners, the project is now well underway.

“Seeing this building come back to life is nothing short of inspiring,” said Kim Cranford, Theater Manager of more than 15 years. “So many of us have poured our hearts into this place, and watching the community rally behind its future means everything.”

“This project represents what a community can accomplish when people come together with passion and purpose,” said Virginia Gantt, Chair of the 36-26 COMEBACK Committee. “Carolina Pines’ support is a meaningful reminder that this theater belongs to all of us, and we’re thrilled to see so many partners rallying around its revitalization.”

When the theater reopens in 2026 – 90 years after its grand debut – it will be a modern, fully ADA-compliant facility featuring new seating, flooring, windows, restrooms, and an elevator. The reimagined upstairs will include a ballroom, catering kitchen, conference room, and balcony seating, expanding opportunities for arts, education, celebrations, and community gatherings.

“At Carolina Pines, we recognize that health isn’t only clinical – it’s social, emotional, and rooted in community connection,” said Dr. Brian Sponseller, Chief Executive Officer of Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. “The Center Theater has brought people together for generations, and the comeback of this space will continue to support the well-being, identity, and vibrancy of Hartsville. We’re simply grateful for the chance to play a small part in its future.”

As both a member of the 36-26 COMEBACK Committee and Vice Chair of the Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees, Nancy McGee expressed her excitement for the project’s momentum.

“This theater has been part of Hartsville’s story for generations. To be involved in its comeback – both as a community member and through my work with Carolina Pines – is a privilege. This effort is about preserving our history while investing in the future, and I’m proud to see our community moving forward together.”

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center’s support aligns with its ongoing commitment to strengthening the communities it serves. A thriving arts scene attracts families, educators, professionals, and workforce talent, contributing directly to regional growth and quality of life. By helping preserve a space that fosters creativity and connection, CPRMC is proud to support a project that will enrich everyday life in Hartsville for years to come.
