Carolina Pines Medical Group Expands Services with New In-House General Surgery Services.

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center is pleased to welcome Matthew Csonka, M.D., a board-certified general surgeon, to Carolina Pines Medical Group. His arrival comes as part of an exciting expansion for the organization, as Carolina Pines introduces general surgery as a new in-house service line, marking the first time the medical group has offered general surgery services internally.

As Carolina Pines continues to grow and respond to the needs of the communities it serves, the addition of in-house general surgery expands access to essential surgical care close to home. Dr. Csonka joins the medical group as the organization takes this next step in strengthening its comprehensive care offerings.

Dr. Csonka earned his medical degree from West Virginia University and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Missouri. He is board-certified in general surgery and has advanced training in open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgical procedures, as well as endoscopy.

“I was inspired to pursue a career in healthcare to have the opportunity to make meaningful and tangible differences in people’s lives and their overall health,” said Dr. Csonka.

Dr. Csonka’s approach to care is rooted in building strong patient-provider relationships and delivering individualized treatment plans. He values open communication, respect, and understanding to ensure each patient’s concerns and goals are thoughtfully addressed.

“Every patient has specific needs that should be addressed in a way that is best tailored to that individual,” he said. “Often, there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach in medicine or surgery.”

Carolina Pines leadership shared their enthusiasm for the expansion of services and having Dr. Csonka join the medical group.

“The launch of general surgery as an in-house service line reflects our ongoing commitment to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of our community,” said Dr. Brian Sponseller, CEO of Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. “Adding this service allows us to provide more coordinated care locally, and we are pleased to welcome Dr. Csonka as part of this important growth for Carolina Pines.”

Originally born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Csonka grew up in Bridgeport, West Virginia. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, making his return to the Palmetto State especially meaningful.

“I’m very excited to be back in South Carolina and joining Carolina Pines Medical Group,” Dr. Csonka said. “What I’m most looking forward to is becoming part of the community and serving patients in this area. Carolina Pines has a strong commitment to caring for Hartsville and its surrounding communities, and I’m honored to be part of that mission.”

Outside of work, Dr. Csonka enjoys spending time with friends and family, being outdoors, and attending sporting events – especially cheering on the South Carolina Gamecocks!

Dr. Csonka is now welcoming patients at Carolina Pines Medical Group. For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit cprmc.com/csonka or call 843.383.2764.
